The outcome of the Echoes Across the Century project at Notre Dame School was a stunning display of artwork which included a field of sculptured horses, majestic horses heads, watercolours depicting blasted landscapes, letters home, moth collections and hand made saddles. Students learnt a great deal about the heritage of the saddlers' trade in WW1 and were surprised to discover that saddles are still hand made today.
The exhibition will be taken down in a couple of weeks but the work by these hard working students will be curated at Guildhall Art Gallery next spring for a major exhibition of the work from all 14 schools in the project. The exhibition will be open to the public fro April through to July with a programme of events and a book to accompany it. Heritage Artist Jane Churchill was thrilled with the outcome of the 5 day workshop project.
The project was supported superbly by the Worshipful Company of Saddlers, to whom Livery Schools Link is most grateful. Thanks go to the Heritage Lottery Fund whose generous grant has made this project possible.
One important outcome of the project has been the understanding of the students about the links between soldiers and their horses. This has helped their understanding of the human stories from WW1.
Our next project, which begins on 16 September, is supported by the Stationers' Company at Stationers' Crown Woods Academy and will be focusing on the design and printing of propaganda posters. Students will visit St Bride's Foundation and Stationers' Hall and will be exploring questions about how ideas for the posters were developed and how those designing and printing the posters felt about the war.
